WE BELIEVE IN SUPPORTING THE FIGHT AGAINST CANCER

Breaking into the Events and Entertainment Industry as a Performer can seem such a daunting task. All the questions that surround it - Am I good enough? How will I make sure I am chosen over other people applying? Where will I find the jobs?
It is perfectly normal to have these questions! So we at KFJ Bookings have compiled a list of all the things that will help you take the first steps in securing that paid performer dream!
Top Tips:
1. Build Your Portfolio: Compile a professional portfolio showcasing your skills, including photos, videos, and a CV where necessary. Highlight your training, experience, and any unique talents you have. Make sure to tailor your portfolio to the type of jobs you're interested in.
2. Decide on Your Niche: Determine what type of performance work you want to pursue, such as Theatre, Film, Television, Live Events, or Corporate Entertainment. This will help you focus your job search and market yourself more effectively.
3. Network: Attend industry events, join workshops, and participate in showcases to meet other performers, agents, and potential employers. Networking can lead to job opportunities and valuable connections.
4. Join Professional Bodies: Becoming a member of organizations like Equity (for actors and performers), Spotlight (for actors and actresses), or the Creative Industries Federation can provide you with resources, support, and access to job listings.
5. Create an Online Presence: Even if this is an Instagram account including photos of you and videos of your skills initially, it opens you up to the online market and offers Agencies and Casting Professionals the opportunity to view you.
6. Research Agencies: Look for reputable agencies that represent performers in your niche. Research their clients and the types of jobs they typically offer to ensure they align with your goals.
7. Audition and Apply: Check agency websites for open calls and auditions, and apply to those that interest you. Some agencies may require a showreel, headshots, or a specific set of skills. Make sure these are all prepared for when you approach any agencies so you can show them what you are all about!
8. Consider Self-Employment: If you prefer the flexibility of freelance work, you can market your skills directly to event planners, venues, and companies that hire performers. It also offers the opportunity to work 'one off bookings' where you are able to meet other, like minded, professionals along the way!
9. Keep Skills Fresh: Continuously develop and update your skills through workshops, classes, and training to stay relevant and competitive. Talk to the people you meet at any bookings that you secure about the classes and workshops they attend because many people offering these workshops are performers themselves.
10. Persevere: The performing arts industry can be tough, with a lot of competition. Keep pushing yourself, stay positive, and don't get discouraged by rejection. Treat every audition or job as an opportunity to improve and grow.
11. Work with booking agents: Once you have some experience and a strong portfolio, approach agents who represent performers in your field. An agent can help you find better-paying jobs and negotiate contracts.
12. Use Social Media: Platforms like Instagram, YouTube, and Facebook can be excellent for showcasing your talent and attracting potential employers. Many agencies across the UK will use their Social Media profiles to advertise opportunities.
Remember, breaking into the industry takes time, persistence, and hard work. Don't be afraid to start small and work your way up. Each job you secure will add to your experience and help you build a strong foundation for a successful career in the performing arts!
